Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as flatwork?
Flatwork is any horizontal concrete surface: sidewalks, garage floors, shop floors, pole-barn slabs, equipment pads, patios, and commercial floors. We handle residential and commercial flatwork throughout Missoula and the surrounding area.
How thick should a garage or shop slab be?
Residential garage floors are typically 4 inches with mesh or rebar. Shop slabs that will see heavy vehicles, lifts, or equipment are usually 5-6 inches or more, with an engineered base and reinforcement. We'll size the slab based on what you're actually doing in the building.
Do I need a vapor barrier under my slab?
For any interior slab, yes. A vapor barrier prevents ground moisture from migrating up into the slab and damaging flooring, framing, or stored items. It's a small cost at pour time that saves significant problems down the road.
Why does flatwork crack and can it be prevented?
Concrete shrinks as it cures, so some cracking is expected. The goal is controlled cracking at the joints we cut. Proper base prep, reinforcement, joint spacing, and curing minimize random cracking. We cut control joints the same day as the pour.
